Sputtering towards spring? Yeah, me too. But I know things go a lot smoother around here if we get outside for a bit. So I’ve rounded up 5 winter activities that are sure to get your kids excited about getting outdoors:
- Snow cooking: Put out some bowls and utensils, maybe even some plastic plates. Encourage your little ones to make some ‘soup’ using twigs, evergreen needles, or bird seed. http://mynearestanddearest.com/snow-cooking/
- Freeze a few trays of coloured ice cubes for your children to play with in the snow! http://happyhooligans.ca/coloured-ice-cubes/
- Make some maple sugar snow candy: only 2 ingredients and 3 simple steps! Check out instructions here: http://www.kidsinthecapital.ca/2012/02/10/maple-syrup-snow-candy/
- Make a winter sun catcher: place natural objects in a pie plate (evergreen needles, bird seed, twigs, pinecones). Pour water into the pie plate (enough to cover everything). Fold a ribbon in half and drape it over the side to make a loop for hanging. Freeze and hang outside! http://www.perkins.org/assets/downloads/educators-series/cindyscorner_wintersuncatchers.pdf
- Make your own snow paint using kool-aid! Just add a packet of kool-aid to an empty bottle (squirt of spray), fill with water, and shake. http://www.growingajeweledrose.com/2013/02/kool-aid-snow-paint.html
May the force be with you these last few weeks of winter!
~D.
